Description:
Abstract:
The Chapter presents the concrete music (musique concrète) and the electronic music (elektronische musik) of the 1950s, through the prism of their techniques, methodologies, and aesthetic research (Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Herbert Eimert and others). The Chapter focuses on the adoption of sound sources as the raw material for composition, the first experiments in sound synthesis with sine generators and the use of serial techniques. It also follows the path of important composers such as Edgard Varèse and Iannis Xenakis. Eventually, it examines the differences between concrete and electronic music.
