Description:
Abstract:
The chapter presents the consideration of colour in the theoretical architectural discourse of the 19th century on the polychromy of classical art and architecture. Colour played a pivotal role in understanding architecture as a holistic design composition. The contemporary architectural conceptions of style applied design, and the modernist “total design” are here examined as to their connection with the concepts of polychromy and the “total work of art” as exemplified by 19th-century architects and academics of the neoclassical discourse and as received by early 20th-century modernist architects.
