Chapter 1 presents historical evidence of the development of the techniques we now recognize as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the positive impact of CPR in international mortality and morbidity statistics. Current basic life support guidelines will be succinctly presented, as well as guidance and information on organizations that train in and/or provide CPR certification.
