Description:
Abstract:
The chapter delves into the contemporary problematics for the organization of urban space at the intermediate scale of the city, in the wider urban planning framework. Beyond the modernist "functional" model of the "city-machine", the contemporary city is approached today as a complex "system of systems" of material infrastructures and immaterial flows, "smart" technological systems and social networks. Emphasis is placed on the human scale, on the urban fragment with the buildings that compose it, and on neighborhood life, as par excellence objects of urban design. The chapter introduces the concepts of horizontal and vertical mixing, density, diversity, and walkability as essential components of urban life and liveability.
