Description:
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on software designed for history teaching. The first part discusses the integration of educational software in education, and its use in teaching and learning history. Then, a brief presentation of learning theories and the impact of the theoretical approach that each one represents on the design and type (open and closed) of educational software follows. Next, the categories of educational software for each theoretical approach are presented, their characteristics and their relation to the types of historical knowledge according to the relevant bibliography, as well as their implications for the teaching practice in history. This is followed by the added value of the utilization of software in the teaching of history as a means of: organizing historical material, enriching historical material with multiple representations, searching for historical sources, comparative study of historical material, creating interpretative models, fostering empathy through capturing students' ideas and opinions, and as cognitive tools for the development of skills such as understanding the cause-and-effect relationship, the integration of historical events in time and space, the understanding of historical concepts etc. Then reference is made to research data regarding the use of such software in teaching history. The second part presents representative software of history in Greek, such as "History of the third and fourth grade", "From the Present to the Past: Themes of Byzantine History", "The Greek State: Birth and Development of Modern Greece" and "Processing of Historical Sources". In addition to presenting their potentials, the above software is evaluated on the basis of the acquisition of historical knowledge, the cultivation of historical thinking skills, the validity and reliability of information and ease of use.
