Growing up in the countryside: From interwar to postwar
Authors: Natsina, Anastasia
Description:
Abstract:
The chapter focuses on the coming of age of bourgeois youth in the countryside, in novels from the end of the interwar period to the early postwar years. The discussion focuses on Kosmas Politis' “Eroica”, Angelos Terzakis' “Journey with Venus”, Melpo Axiotis' “Difficult Nights” and Margarita Lymperakis' “Straw Hats”. Male writers are shown to idealize yet at the same time display a fear/repulsion for nature (largely identified with women), while female writers view nature in its multiple material dimensions and avoid its sexist identification with their gender.
