Description:
Abstract:
This chapter presents the basic operating principles of mechanical ventilation. Basic principles of the physiology of breathing will be analyzed and the reader will understand airflow within the lungs, pressure gradients between the atmosphere and respiratory system compartments during the mechanical breath. Airway pressure, pleural pressure, alveolar pressure and their respective gradients are explained along with the mechanical properties of the respiratory system.
