Description:
Abstract:
Transplantation is one of the greatest medical achievements of the 20th century, and nowadays it has evolved to a technologically advanced medical procedure that significantly improves the quality of life and the life expectancy of the chronically ill patient. Starting from the historical review of transplantation, the aim of this textbook is to communicate to young physicians not only the process, but also the evolution, the importance and the necessity of transplantation. A necessary condition for transplants is the donation of organs, as well as the understanding and the acceptance of the donation procedure. There are regulatory frameworks governing transplantation, which are country-specific but all are operating according to international standards. Topics that will be analyzed are: bioethical issues, medical criteria for the diagnosis of brain death, the legislative framework for donation as well as hematopoietic cell donor and tissue banks. A necessary condition for transplantation is the close cooperation of members of a multidisciplinary team, consisting of several medical specialties. Students will be informed about the procedures for identifying and evaluating potential donors, as well as the need for thorough screening and pre-transplant evaluation of the prospective recipient. They will familiarise themselves with the basic knowledge of transplant immunology, as well as the current immunosuppressive protocols. The textbook aims to bring medical students closer to transplantation. It roughly describes the surgical procedure of organ transplantation, the potential short-term and long-term medical complications of the recipient and the allograft failure over time. It offers the opportunity to learn about the donation process as well as the indications and the results of hematopoietic cell transplantation. The primary objective of the course is for the multifaceted process of transplantation to be understood and thoroughly studied. However, the need to strengthen the idea of donation and to create social awareness about the value of donation, starting with young health scientists, is also of paramount importance.
