In this chapter, we study the Internet of Things. Initially, the capabilities of IoT systems are presented, as well as their main areas of its application. Then, the distributed architectures of IoT systems are studied as well as the protocols at the various layers of these architectures. This is followed by the introduction of small-scale IoT applications such as Do It Yourself (DIY) applications in the home and education, medium-scale applications such as the smart home, and finally large-scale applications such as smart cities and smart factory facilities.
