The study of security in Distributed Systems covers a wide range of applications, from networks, servers, and terminals, to operating systems and software applications. In this chapter we mainly examine the following topics: security threats, security problems in the reference model, security mechanisms, VPN, cryptography, authentication, access control, confidentiality, digital signatures, public key infrastructures (PKI), information integrity, distributed denial of service (DDoS), IP layer security, intrusion detection systems (IDS), intrusion prevention systems (IPS) and firewalls.
