Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter we examine three very important services, which are necessary for the operation of Distributed Systems. These are the Name Service, the Directory Service, and the Resource Locator Service. A Name Service provides a uniform namespace and the translation of resource names into network addresses. This makes it possible to manage the names of distributed resources as well as their identifiers. Additionally, namespaces, namespace merging, and namespace implementation are introduced, as well as the Domain Name System (DNS). Then, the Directory Services are presented, which are necessary for searching the address of the distributed resource, using as criteria, the type, the geographical location and the owner of the searched resource. Three popular directory services, ISO’s X.500 directory service, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), and Microsoft’s Active Directory service are presented in detail. Finally, Locating Services are presented, which provide the current location of the mobile resource, and the ability to cooperate with directory services. In addition, issues related to home location and forwarding pointers are explained.
