In this introductory chapter, an overview of Distributed Systems (DS) is given, with an emphasis on their description, the general problems which they are called to solve and the needs which they address, as well as their relationship with Information Systems (IS) and other distributed modern applications. In addition, the antecedents of DSs and their evolution are examined, and the importance of their effective management is highlighted.
