Navigating Gender in/as Theatre and Performance
Authors: Ristani, Maria
Description:
Abstract:
This chapter begins with an investigation of how modern theatre and performance art can negotiate normative understandings of gender and sexuality, thus offering alternate, polyvalent, and fluid scenarios of the gendered body. Drawing on several examples from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries of Anglophone theatre (documentary theatre, drag performances, audio-based drama) and focusing on dramaturgical and scenic manifestations of gender and sexuality, the chapter presents how theatre praxis has been a space of experimentation and diverse representation celebrating gender as a possibility rather than a set of prescriptions and codes.
