Abstract:
The chapter begins with an examination of the right to vote, its conditions and an evaluation of its use in American and other political systems. This is followed by a presentation of basic majoritarian and proportional systems, as well as the institution of internal, primary elections. Then, data on elections, on the US legislatures, and on the president are given. The importance of political money and the conditions for conducting an election campaign are also discussed. The chapter concludes with an examination of political parties and their functions, and a discussion of some of the major party systems.
