Abstract: |
This textbook can be seen as a prelude to Political Science. It is less loaded with specialized terminology and avoids academic jargon, compared to typical introductory textbooks. Instead, it is rich in examples and experiences from everyday life and, as far as possible, uses simple, unrefined language. In terms of content, it deals with all the fundamental issues and the main concepts and considerations of Political Science, in the fields of Comparative Political Analysis, Political Theory and International Relations. It gives emphasis on the American political system, but it is not limited to it.
“A Primer on Politics” explores the phenomenon of power in its various aspects. It provides a brief historical review of models of government from antiquity to the prevalence of modern democracy. Also, it defines the scope of political philosophy and its main themes. Furthermore, the textbook presents the main political ideologies and analyses the forms of government with emphasis on democracy. It, also, explains the role of political culture, political communication, and interest groups in politics as well as approaching the phenomenon of political parties in relation to elections and electoral systems. Finally, it describes the distinction between executive, legislative and judicial powers and their relations. It discusses all aspects of economic policy and the main economic systems and it examines the major theories of international relations and the basic features of the international system.
