Abstract: |
The book “Contemporary curricula for the education of young children: pedagogical principles, content, learning areas” refers to curriculum revisions in recent years, where the transition from an emphasis on objectives to an emphasis on competences is characteristic. This transition reflects the emphasis placed on the active role of children in the pace of the program. A variety of curricula from different countries, in Europe, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, aiming at young children are presented. Pedagogical principles are analyzed and the learning areas of different curricula are presented. The structure of these curricula, the pedagogical principles, the content, the learning areas, constitute a field of analysis. Policy makers around the world are aware of the importance of Early Childhood Education due to research innovations and social changes in recent decades. This importance is driven, among others, by the recognition of the role of Early Childhood Education in the service of the rights and well-being of children, by the commitments made for equal opportunities for women in the labor market and by scientific data from fields as diverse as Neuroscience that demonstrate the benefits of quality early childhood experiences.
