Abstract:
The theoretical background of the meteorological data assimilation technique is presented in this chapter. The methods of successive corrections and least squares are setting the background of the variational approach. This approach in the three-dimensional form (3DVar) is thoroughly presented here along with a number of applications and exercises for an in depth understanding of the data assimilation methods.
