Authors: Katsavounidou, Garyfallia
Description:
Abstract:
The historical overview of the creation and development of human settlements starts from the dawn of civilization. The analysis of the causes and reasons for the creation of the first cities in the “Fertile Crescent” shows the complex -social, economic, technological, and spatial- basis of the urban phenomenon. Both natural and anthropogenic parameters influence the choice of the cite, the form and the diachronic development of a settlement. The Ionian cities of 5th century BC were the first attempts on systematic city planning in history. The differences between organic and planned development are also explained. An important milestone in the history of urban form is the era of the Renaissance, specifically the invention of perspective. Characteristic public spaces from the Baroque era (Rome) and the Rococo period (Paris are presented which show the transformation of urban space from its function as the field for everyday activities to an impressive scenery for the holders of power.
