The concept of cataloguing
Authors: Kyprianos, Konstantinos
Reviewer: Kyriaki-Manessi, Daphne
Description:
Abstract:
The goals of the chapter are to define the context in which cataloguing takes place and to introduce its basic concepts. The discussion begins with an introduction to the broader realm of information organization and defines where catalogues and cataloguing fall within this realm. Catalogues are discussed, with particular emphasis on their functions and their constituent parts. It also presents the display (i.e. how records are displayed in the catalogue) and retrieval provisions in online catalogues. An overview of the entire cataloguing process is given - descriptive cataloguing, subject analysis and authority control. This is followed by an overview of collaborative cataloguing and the ability to copy records from other catalogues which allows the employment of ready-to-use records without the need to record all the items in a library's collection from scratch, saving time, effort and money. In addition, there is an introduction to the formats of metadata records in the catalogues. Finally, the steps of a complete cataloging process are given from the moment an item arrives at the library (through the acquisition process) to the moment that item is available for library users on the shelves.
