Authors: Lainas, Sotirios

Description:
Abstract:
This chapter deals with the dynamics of groups as proposed by Psychology and other social sciences. At the same time, it is attempted to link the presented theories with practical implications concerning the reality of the governance of cooperative projects. This connection is carried out by correlating the theories of group dynamics with the cooperative principles and the principles of self-management and mutual aid. The first sections of the chapter present the definitions of the group and the basic characteristics that distinguish a group from other collective forms. The terms of a team’s creation and the stages of its creation and development, as reflected in international research, are then discussed. The following modules present current knowledge about the roles that can be adopted by group members, focus on leadership issues and communication processes and relationships between them, as well as issues related to group cohesion. The last sections of the chapter concern the factors that facilitate the proper functioning of a self-managed group and the potential risks emerging. Finally, particular emphasis is placed on the issue of conflicts in group contexts and especially on how to prevent and deal with them.
