From the 1980s: (Meta)modernism and the new directions
Authors: Sakallieros, Giorgos
Description:
Abstract:
As the first period of the Greek postwar musical avant-garde reaches its end-of-cycle, many of its representatives are inclining towards a revision of their creative course from the 1980s onwards. In the final chapter the next generation of composers, although shaped within the 1960s’ and 70s’ modernist storm, is approached through their exploration of postmodernist (or other) perspectives. Moreover, the leading role of Theodore Antoniou, the “modernist” rise of Thessaloniki, the revival of educational and artistic music institutions, the influence of musicological research, as well as some concluding remarks regarding the relations between modernism and the course of Greek art music during the first decades of the 21st century, are comparatively presented and commented upon.
