Mitropoulos, Sikelianos and Cavafy. Music and poetry in Interwar avant-garde
Authors: Sakallieros, Giorgos
Description:
Abstract:
In Chapter 4, a combination of musical and literary approach on the introduction of musical modernism in Greece through the vocal works of Dimitri Mitropoulos in the 1920s is attempted. The composer’s aesthetic perception of modernism is examined through a context of somehow miscellaneous elements; the particularities of Sikelianos’s and Cavafy’s poetic language, already expressing modernism in Greek letters; the implementation of austere Baroque genres and contrapuntal techniques; a new conception of vocal setting; and the adoption of atonality.
