The Ruttan theory and environmental Kuznets Curve examines the relationship between economic growth and the environment. Nowadays, it is generally recognized that protection of the environment and competitiveness go together. It is also examined how pollution, population and income are interlinked. Furthermore, an important issue is the effect of the cost of environmental policies on macroeconomic variables of a country.
