Abstract:
This chapter is the first basic application of all the theoretical notions that were introduced in the previous chapters. It discusses Case assignment and the dependencies formed between arguments, with or without movement. The first pattern concerns passives and unaccusatives, while the second pattern concerns anaphoric binding which expresses a relation between two arguments with distinct theta-roles and Case. The empirical data mainly comes from Greek, but there is also a comparative aspect, so that both the theory as well as the data are better understood. The chapter consists of 5 sections. The first two sections introduce the notion of Case. Section three and four consider passives and unaccusatives, where chain-formation involves two elements, one bearing the theta-role and the other bearing Case. Section five is a very basic introduction to anaphoric binding. The discussion is followed by a summary, suggestions for further reading and exercises.
