Description:
Abstract:
A popular technique in documentary filmmaking, oral narration, despite being heavily contested by many creators and even "exiled" by some movements and genres, has remained largely a beloved and useful technique with numerous original approaches to content and style. The various functions of speech are presented in detail (information summarization, scene bridging, interpretation of visuals, etc.) alongside the diversity in speech style (third-person, authoritative invisible voice, personal first-person narration, etc.). Following the detailed presentation of different aesthetic choices, technical guidelines are provided concerning writing the narration text, selecting narrators, guiding their performance, and recording techniques.
