Description:
Abstract:
The goal of this textbook is twofold: a) to introduce undergraduate students to the basic parameters of the study of ancient Greek pottery with an emphasis on the examination of shapes, technique, and repertory of Attic vases of the Archaic and Classical periods, and b) to analyze the Thracian iconography through selected Attic vases decorated with themes that reflect the interactions between Athens and Thrace. This approach offers a new model for studying ancient Thrace, giving the opportunity to students on one hand to familiarize themselves with Attic pottery vase-painting and on the other to explore the Thracian mythological cycle and the historical and social context of Athens and Thrace. The textbook does not follow a single art-historical methodology but takes into account questions of trade and cultural relations between the two areas, aiming to outline the frame in which Thracian iconography developed. Therefore, the textbook is appropriate for more advanced readers, as well, such as MA students, instructors, and for English-speaking programs, thanks to the extended English summaries accompanying every chapter. The book consists of seven chapters: the first two discuss the importance of pottery in the study of ancient Greece and particularly the role of Attic vases (ch. 1-2); then follows an in-depth analysis of the interrelations between Athens and Thrace through the study of select Attic vases with Thracian iconography (ch. 3) and an overview of Attic vases in Thrace (ch. 4); ch, 5 offers a summary on the significance of Attic pottery to the study of ancient Thrace, while ch. 6 provides a glimpse to the metal vases from ancient Thrace and their relation to Attic vessels. Ch. 7 includes various exercises that help improve the understanding and study of students.
