Abstract: |
Here, a characteristic example will be provided for a non-functional approach to translation. An excerpt from an introduction by an ancient Greek philosopher containing numerous anachronisms and culturally specific elements will be used. First, the translation command will be given to translate the excerpt from Greek to German using a descriptive, non-functional strategy, meaning without considering the German culture of reception and the German language of reception. This translation product will be analyzed in terms of its deficiencies (cultural, lexical, syntactic, stylistic) and the problems that arise for understanding and acceptance by the German target audience, and to what extent this translation can function properly in the cultural and linguistic space for which it is intended. Then, a functional translation version will be presented, including analysis and explanation of the translation choices made.
