Description:
Abstract:
This chapter concerns the gravitational field of a set of masses with a given distribution. The field intensity and potential are calculated, both by direct application of the law of gravity whenever possible, and by application of Gauss's and Poisson's laws. The multipole expansion and the potential energy of a mass distribution are also discussed. Various topics related to gravity such as tidal forces and space applications are then discussed.
