Dynamics of a rigid body
Authors: Vlahakis, Nektarios
Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, the motion of a rigid body under the influence of forces/torques is studied. This motion can be decomposed into a translation motion of an arbitrary point of the body O (e.g. the center of mass K, but not necessarily) and a rotation about an axis passing through O. Alternatively, it can be analyzed as a screw motion, i.e. rotational around some axis, unique at each time and translational along that axis. The preferred method depends on whether the body moves in space or is constrained to be planar, whether it is about a fixed axis or about a fixed point. Examples are studied for each such case, through Newtonian or Analytical Mechanics. Among them, the physical pendulum, the rolling of a body without slipping, the motion of a top, the free rotation of a rigid body in space and its stability are studied.
