Title Details:
Use of potential energy in “one-dimensional” problems
Authors: Vlahakis, Nektarios
Description:
Abstract:
This chapter concerns the use of the energy integral in the study of the motion of a point particle. It discusses how the potential energy function in one-dimensional problems, through its graph, gives information about the range of motion, whether there are equilibrium points, and the motion close to them. The method is applied to one-dimensional problems, i.e. to those where the position is determined through a single coordinate (not necessarily Cartesian), but also in cases where through other integrals we can eliminate all coordinates except one, in which case the motion is reduced to one-dimensional.
