Abstract:
Global poverty has fallen significantly in recent decades (mainly due to China's rapid growth). According to the World Bank, in 2015 10% of the world's population lived on less than $1.90 a day, compared to 36% in 1990. Yet progress has been geographically uneven and the number of people living in absolute poverty remains unacceptably high. Poverty in South Asia and particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa has not significantly declined and in many cases has worsened. Moreover, even in countries with high rates of economic growth, internal inequalities have widened. Climate change has worsened the lives of poor farmers in Africa and South Asia, while the Covid-19 pandemic has particularly affected developing countries.
