Description:
Abstract:
In the present chapter we examine the characteristics and types of the historical film, and we will discuss the ways in which they develop historical consciousness and a unique type of historical memory. Moreover, we explore the ways a film in general and a historical film in particular can be analyzed, as well as the potentials and the limitations of the introduction of this medium in history teaching. After the presentation of the existing research data regarding the use of fiction and documentary films for history education, we specifically focus on the use of documentary films. Last, we examine the limitations of films as educational tools and explore examples of best practices.
