Description:
Abstract:
The first part of the chapter introduces us to the concept of digital mapping and its connection to visualization. Reference is made here to the concepts of continuity and change, as well as differentiation of teaching, towards which the use of digital historical maps contributes. The second part focuses on the pedagogical framework of digital mapping, which is based on the learning by doing approach. Specifically, the added value of digital maps in history teaching is presented in terms of (1) understanding the spatio-temporal framework of historical phenomena, (2) sensing space and time, (3) understanding continuity and change, (4) correlating history with geography and (5) linking digital maps with the development of historical thinking concepts, such as source analysis, continuity and change, causes and consequences, and historical perspectives. Then, research data regarding the use of digital maps in history teaching are presented, as well as the difficulties and limitations of their use in history lessons. Finally, relevant educational visualization software and participatory web tools for the creation of digital historical maps are presented and their possibilities and educational uses in history teaching are discussed. Activities aimed at understanding the ways of using historical maps / maps with historical content follow: searching historical maps on the Internet by criteria, navigating digital map sites, evaluating and organizing historical maps. The chapter concludes with the demonstration of maps of the Center for Digital Geographical Education of the Department of Digital Geographical Education of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the presentation of a table with the repositories of digital maps.
