Description:
Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the basic models of mechanical ventilation and to present the differences between fully controlled mechanical ventilation (volume or pressure controlled) and models of assisted mechanical ventilation (volume or pressure assist). In addition, the chapter provides data for understanding the difference between invasive mechanical ventilation, used in intubated patients, and noninvasive ventilation, used either in the Intensive Care Unit or in another hospital department. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV) are, also, described.
