The fifth chapter presents the main marine masses that make up the hydrological column of the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea (section 1), together with the surface (spatial) distribution of temperature and salinity (section 2). Section 3 describes the surface circulation, while section 4 makes special reference to the exchange of marine masses across the Mediterranean straits. The chapter is rounded off with a reference to the astronomical tides (section 5) and the wave regime (section 6).
