Gender identities and gender roles
Authors: Pantelidou Maloutas, Maro
Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 5 will focus on pinning down younger and older people's identities in the early 2000s, to explore the importance of gender roles in their formation. We will make an introductory presentation of the evolution of "identity" and identity references to late modernity, in order to understand their role in the constitution of subjectivity and their political significance. The aim here is to capture parameters that characterize our sample, focusing on gender and the roles stereotypically associated with it, beyond the generally accepted as important identity reference to the Left / Right distinction and the possible existence of a conscious ideological identity. The data used refer to the cultural environment of 2006, that is, just before the crisis and the significant re-socializing effect it had on youth, while also exploring perceptions of gender roles at the turn of the century. The aim is to clarify whether young people, are differentiated according to gender and young and old women, according to age, , in terms of key reference to their sense of identity and gender roles associated with it. Also, whether perceptions of the relevant roles change over time. The above investigation is part of a problematique concerning the relationship between democracy and the system of dichotomous gender identities.
