Description:
Abstract:
This chapter presents the educational use of Applied Arts and Design. First, the basic elements of the Design communication code are explained, as well as the main principles through which they are combined into a single composition. Then, the theoretical background of the pedagogical utilization of the Applied Arts is given, mainly through the presentation of Vygotsky's theory of activity, as proposed by Engeström. The next section presents the didactic use of Applied Arts in the classroom through practical application. Emphasis is placed on the design thinking model, which finds full correspondence with the Design process. This is followed by the presentation of the application of critical reflection techniques to design objects, where the need to investigate the wider context of the objects' production is particularly emphasized, against the simple observation of its external characteristics, while two of the most appropriate models of critical investigation of the objects are analyzed. At the end of each unit, some indicative activities are given, adapted to the needs of primary education. The chapter concludes with a brief reference to the modern concepts of Digital and Sustainable Design.
