Abstract:
This chapter aims to define the framework of 21st century education as well as the advantages of connecting the Visual Arts with the teaching approach of competencies development in learning and teaching environments. A particular reference is made to the main international and national educational frameworks that define the competencies of the 21st century, as well as to the interconnection of these competencies with the Visual Arts, as they are approached in the official curriculum and supplementary material. In addition, the chapter describes the important advantages of aesthetic experience as an active process and a special form of understanding the world through all the senses, which in turn contributes to the development of critical thinking, creativity, cooperation, and communication skills. The chapter concludes with suggested techniques and tools that support the design of modern art-based learning environments in early childhood education and training.
