The first chapter of the monograph includes some introductory topics concerning the issue of regional inequality. The first section focuses on the basic conceptual framework of regional inequality while the second one includes the definition and the criteria for the division of regions; these issues are very crucial in terms of the measurement of regional inequality and the design, implementation and evaluation of regional policy. The third section focuses on the causes and instruments of dealing with the regional problem, while the following two sections concern the regional policy both in Greece and the European Union.
