Description:
Abstract:
Following on from the previous chapter, we focus on the post-war acceleration of new technologies and how new forms in the field of media studies by Lev Manovich create new networks and new situations for the field of visual production. We consider how the so-called new media, the ability to reproduce and redefine images (digitally) form the basis for rethinking our beliefs about art itself, both in terms of its mediums and processes-issues that seem to be central in the discourse of contemporary art and its various transitions. From the experimental techniques that emerged in the second half of the 20th century to the consolidation of video and digital art and the post-medium perspective, we study developments within the screen and beyond the interface with it, from virtual space to augmented reality, tactical media and hacktivism. We study the history and central theoretical concepts describing digital art forms and the various analyses and critical approaches to the relationship between technology, digitality and science that have not only defined artistic practices but have contributed to a structural change in the production and reception of the artwork. Through the presentation and analysis of case studies regarding key texts, we trace the intersections of digital and new media art forms with contemporary art practices, as well as the ruptures and the tendency of new media art to break away from the field of visual arts.
