Description:
Abstract:
This chapter examines the adventures of the object and the exhibited apparatus, as they are approached from the formalist, structuralist tradition to post-structuralist, deconstructive approaches. A trajectory is charted by the rethinking of the object, its relationship to the cultural industry and its materiality, and a shift in the mental conception of the artwork and the exhibition event. From artist Marcel Broodthaers' founding of the fictional Museum of Modern Art to artist Andrea Fraser's performative sex scene with a collector of her work, the chapter traces practices from the first generation of institutional critique, of the 1960s to current practices at the crossroads of art and activism, examining the passage from the interrogation of the 'function of the museum' to the consideration of the 'museum as a battlefield'.
